The Delaware Civil Law Clinic provides free legal services to impoverished clients in conjunction with
Delaware Volunteer Legal Services (DVLS). For students, the clinic offers an excellent opportunity to work real cases with actual clients and develop practical legal skills such as interviewing, counseling, negotiating, and trial advocacy.
As a third-year student, you will work for 20 hours a week. You’ll answer Legal Help Link calls and determine if prospective clients need representation. You’ll interview clients, prepare for trial, work with volunteer attorneys through DVLS, and appear in court. You will obtain litigation experience in Family Court, representing victims of domestic violence who are seeking protection, and handle custody and visitation matters. You also might assist the elderly or terminally ill by helping to draft wills, power-of-attorney documents, or advanced healthcare directives.
Not only does the Delaware Civil Law Clinic provide you with valuable legal experience, but it also teaches you the value of public service and the necessity of providing equal access to justice.
