Richard G. Handler is an Adjunct Professor at Widener’s Delaware campus. He received a BA from Adelphi University, Garden City, New York in 1973, a JD from Widener Law School in 1977, where he acted as an Article’s Editor of the Delaware Journal of Corporate Law. From 1979 to 1981, he attended New York University Law School, as an LLM Candidate. In 2008, he received a MS in Historic Preservation from Columbia University, Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation.

Having clerked for Reuss & Ruchala, Esqs., Garden City, New York from 1976 to 1977, he later advanced to Associate and then Partner of Reuss, Ruchala & Handler through 1988. From 1988 to present, Professor Handler is a principal of the Law Offices of Richard G. Handler with offices in Amityville, New York, specializing in Zoning, Real Estate and Historic Preservation Law. He also serves as legal counsel to various municipalities and Historic Preservation Commissions.

In 1979, Professor Handler joined the faculty of Graduate School of Adelphi University, Garden City, New York, where he taught as an Adjunct Professor through 2009 teaching various law related courses. He joined the adjunct faculty at Widener Law School in 1999 teaching New York Civil Practice and later, Historic Preservation Law.

Professor Handler is admitted to practice in the States of New York and New Jersey and before the Federal District Courts in the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States.

Serving numerous professional, civic and historic preservation organizations Professor Handler is active in the New York State and Suffolk County Bar Associations; a member of the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association of the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation; a ten time Delegate to the New York State Judicial Convention; the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities; a member of the Board of Advisors of First American Title Insurance Co. of New York; and for fun, a roving Lecturer on Theodore Roosevelt and a guide at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site from 2005 to present.
