The Business Organizations Law Certificate Program offers J.D. candidates the opportunity to develop a fundamental knowledge of business law. Students who complete course requirements gain legal knowledge that is a predicate to advanced practice in business law. To complete the program, students must also distinguish themselves by achieving strong grades and completing a major research paper, through work on
The Delaware Journal of Corporate Law, a business law seminar, or directed research with a member of the Institute’s full-time faculty.
Admission RequirementsApplicants must complete and submit a registration form to the Registrar’s Office.
Required Courses
- Business Organizations (4 credits)
- Business Principles (2 credits)
- Securities Regulation (3 credits)
Elective Courses Participants must complete at least two additional business law courses, from the list of advanced courses identified below or as approved by the Director of the Institute of Delaware Corporate and Business Law or his/her designee:
- International Business Transactions (3 credits)
- Introduction to Business Tax (2 credits)
- Mutual Funds (2 or 3 credits)
- Nonprofit Organizations (2 credits)
- Seminar: LLC’s and Statutory Trusts (2 credits)
- Seminar: Negotiating & Drafting Business Contracts (2 credits)
- Seminar: Advanced Corporations (2 credits)
- Corporate Bankruptcy (3 credits)
- Seminar: Securities Litigation (2 credits)
Writing Requirement Participants must complete a scholarly paper on a subject involving business organizations law. The paper may be submitted in satisfaction of the requirements for membership on The
Delaware Journal of Corporate Law, as directed research performed with a full-time member of the faculty of the Widener
Institute of Delaware Corporate Law, or as part of a business law seminar.
Grade Requirements
To graduate with a Certificate in Business Organizations law, the Juris Doctor candidate must earn a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.8 in courses required by the Program. Students with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.8 in courses required by the Program, including any grade associated with the writing requirement. Students with a cumulative grade point average of 3.15 or over in those courses will be awarded a Certificate in Business Organizations Law with honors.
