Law & Government Institute offers a Consumer Law Certificate that teaches students to defend consumer interests through the legislative process while gaining a more detailed understanding of consumer regulations.
Required Courses In order to satisfy the required course segment of the Consumer Law certification, you must successfully complete the State Administrative Law course and one of the following courses:

There is no requirement for a student to take any elective courses for the Consumer Law Certificate; however, extended division students may substitute an elective for the required externship.
Externship Requirement Regular Division Students: In addition to the required courses, you must: complete one Law and Government consumer externship with a consumer nonprofit agency such as American Association of Retired Persons or the Consumer Law Center. Contact Externship Director Karen Durkin (

Vice Dean John Gedid to arrange for externships under this certificate program.
Extended Division Students: You may, at your election, complete an externship or substitute a Law and Government elective course for the externship.
Writing Requirement To earn the Consumer Law Certificate, you must complete a Law and Government writing requirement. This paper may also be submitted to satisfy the upper class writing requirement that all students must meet. The Director of the Law and Government Institute and the Consumer Law professor must approve all paper topics submitted to satisfy this requirement in advance. The paper is usually written in connection with one of the consumer law courses.
