In partnership with the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (NCCUSL) – a private nonprofit body that proposes uniform or model statutes for states – Widener’s
Law & Government Institute offers a special legislative program in which students research conflicts between existing state statutes and the model statutes created by the NCCUSL. The Legislation Certificate Program requires students not only to research these conflicts, but also to draft proposed amendments or suggest the elimination of existing statutes. In order to satisfy the requirements of the Legislation Certificate Program, you must complete a required course, an externship, and a writing requirement.
Required Courses In order to meet requirements for the Legislation Certificate, you must complete either the Legislation or the Legislative Drafting courses.
Externship Requirement In addition to the required course, you must successfully complete a three credit, two-semester sequence of directed research and writing. The first semester consists of a one-credit research component, and the second is a two-credit writing portion.
Writing Requirement Finally, you must complete a substantial paper of at least 25 pages that reports your research findings and recommendations relative to the model statute assigned to you. Please note that this paper will satisfy the senior writing requirement.
