PHILADELPHIA -- Widener University School of Law announces
Steven P. Barsamian '75
as the 2005
Alumnus of the Year
. Alumnus Eugene D. McGurk, Jr. '78, chairman of the Law School Board of Overseers presented the award at The National Constitution Center during the Law School's 30th Anniversary Celebration on October 7, 2005. "We were pleased to honor Steve's substantial contributions at such a special occasion," said Assistant Vice President for Law School Development and Alumni Relations Deborah McCreery.
The award is presented to an alumnus or alumna who, through service to his or her community or profession, or other accomplishments, has brought honor, recognition, and distinction to Widener University School of Law. Barsamian is a sole practitioner in Philadelphia where he specializes in immigration, citizenship and immigration-related litigation. He has been president of the Law School Alumni Association for five years and has been involved with the association since 1976. "I do it because I enjoy being the school's advocate," Barsamian said. "I owe a great debt of gratitude to the Law School."
In his acceptance speech, Barsamian highlighted the contributions of the late Alfred Avins, the school's founder and first dean. Barsamian has worked diligently in support of the Law School fundraising effort to honor Avins. Funds raised will rename space in the school's Legal Information Center, the "Alfred Avins Special Collections Library;" fund a scholarship in Avins' name; and establish an account to assist with library preservation efforts. "He's responsible for the Law School's existence and every one of us being a lawyer. We owe it to him to honor him," Barsamian said.
Barsamian and his wife, Linda, have a daughter Taylor, 13, and son Steven, 18, who is a student at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster.
