Wilmington, Del. - The Widener University School of Law has announced winners of its 2007 alumni awards, given annually to recognize outstanding leadership, service, and achievement of its graduates. Widener University School of Law has honored and awarded its distinguished alumni since 1976. This year's event was held Sept. 24 in the Ruby R. Vale Moot Courtroom on the Delaware campus.
"Tonight's recipients have set the example for what it means to be a member of this noble profession," Law Dean Linda L. Ammons said. "It must be particularly rewarding to be selected by your peers for an award of distinction."
Award recipients were:Outstanding Alumnus/Alumna of the Year Award was given to
Catherine N. Harrington, '88, founding member, president and managing attorney of Harrington & Associates, P.C. in Philadelphia. Harrington's practice concentrates on insurance defense, personal injury, medical malpractice, and general civil litigation. She also serves as arbitrator for the Philadelphia Court of Common Please and ADR cases. Harrington & Associates is an all female law firm employing other Widener alumnae and students as well.
The purpose of the award is to commend an alumnus or alumna who, through service to his or her community or profession, and by honors received, service rendered or other accomplishments, has brought honor, recognition and distinction to the Widener University School of Law.
Outstanding Service Awards were presented to
Lucy S. L. Amerman '76, The Hon. Richard M. Cappelli '81, and
Leslie A. Johnson '92. The service awards are granted for outstanding alumni service to the law school as a whole, to a particular concentration within the school or to the legal profession.
Amerman, the rector at Trinity Episcopal Church in Buckingham, Pa., is responsible for all aspects of parish ministry. Reverend Amerman has also led multi-generational mission trips to rural central Pennsylvania and coastal Alabama to conduct storm-relief work.
Judge Cappelli currently serves as magisterial district judge for the townships of Bethel, Chadds Ford, Concord and Thornbury in Pennsylvania.
Johnson, an associate professor of law at Widener Law, has held teaching appointments ranging from adjunct faculty member to visiting associate professor.
Outstanding Recent Alumni Awards were presented to
George A. Bibikos '03, and
Jennifer Stonerod '05.Bibikos is an associate at the law firm of Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis, LLP in Harrisburg, Pa. He concentrates in federal and state appellate, constitutional and governmental litigation.
Stonerod is an associate at the law firm of Parker McCay in Marlton, N.J. She practices in the area of medical malpractice defense, which includes the representation of area doctors, nurses, and hospitals in civil litigation. Stonerod also earned a bachelor's degree from Widener in 2000.
