Seminar Description
Widener Law School is pleased to announce the Widener Law Summer Alumni and Friends Program in Volterra, Italy. The program will be based on readings which explore the concept of culture and its impact on law and justice. The facilitators will examine the readings, which include classic works dating from antiquity and contemporary literature, and discuss with the participants whether there are universal or primary principles of justice or whether the concept of justice is merely relative to a particular culture and society. The facilitators will focus on difficult subjects such as: To what extent do cultural mores and values shape a society’s concept of justice? What is the relationship between a culture’s idea of justice and its laws? How do major aspects of a culture – religion, art, education, philosophy – influence a society’s concept of justice and that society’s laws? Is a society’s concept of justice more determined by religion, government, philosophy or its economy?

These important issues will be explored in a lively format that engages each participant and challenges previously-held notions of law and justice. These thought-provoking discussions are certain to return each participant to the practice of law and the administration of justice, not only with a deeper appreciation of these important ideas but also with the realization that these ideas impact the day-to-day ethical and professional decisions that lawyers and judges face.
