Sports and entertainment law event to examine drug use in athletics

A discussion on drug use in professional athletics will lead off the agenda at Widener Law’s annual daylong conference on hot topics in sports, music, self publishing and ethics.

The event Tuesday, Feb. 26 on the law school’s campus at 4601 Concord Pike, Wilmington, Del. will begin with the panel discussion featuring Mike Missanelli, Esq. of ESPN affiliate 97.5 The Fanatic and Widener Law Associate Professor Andre Smith.

The conference, now in its eighth year, is presented by the student-run Sports and Entertainment Law Association under the direction of Widener Law Adjunct Professor Alexander Murphy. Murphy will also take part in each of the day’s panel discussions, largely as a moderator.

The “Drug Use in Professional Athletics” panel featuring Missanelli and Smith will run from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Other event panel topics include attorney responsibilities as a player agent, and a conversation with Mark Levine, the author of “The Fine Print of Self-Publishing.” A panel on musical artists’ income streams and how lawyers can protect them will include attorney John Simson, former chief executive officer of SoundExchange, the first U.S. performing rights organization formed to collect digital performance royalties for recording artists.

For practicing attorneys in Delaware and Pennsylvania attendance at the program offers five continuing legal education credits, including one ethics credit. New Jersey attorneys can self report for credits with a Widener Law certificate of attendance. The registration cost for attorneys attending for credit is $125 and includes continental breakfast, lunch and snacks; the fee for Widener Law alumni is $100. The event is free for students and members of the general public, but does not include program materials or meals.
