On Wednesday September 9, Widener Law’s Harrisburg campus will hold “A Wise Latina Day” event from 12:00 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. to celebrate the debut of Justice Sonia Sotomayor on the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court will meet for a special session on the 9th to rehear arguments in the important First Amendment case Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission.
The event will feature four speakers. Widener alumna Sharon Lopez ’93, chair of the Lancaster Bar Association diversity committee, will address the impact of Sotomayor’s debut on the Hispanic legal community. Associate Professor Michael R. Dimino Sr.
will speak about the judicial selection process while Associate Dean for Faculty Research and Development Robert C. Power
will offer comments on the case, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, being heard. Finally, Dean of Students Keith E. Sealing
will discuss the case of Ricci v. DeStefano, in which the Supreme Court reversed Sotomayor’s upholding of a District Court affirmative action case involving firefighter promotions in New Haven, Connecticut by a margin of 5-4.
The event is open to the entire law school community and invited friends. The event will be broadcast to the Delaware campus, and members of the Widener Law community on the Delaware campus are invited to view the live broadcast beginning at 12:00 p.m. in the Ruby R. Vale Moot Courtroom.
