On Tuesday, April 27, 2010 Delaware Chapter of the Widener Women's Network held a networking luncheon in Wilmington, DE. The event was sponsored by Katherine Mayer ‘98 at her law firm McCarter & English LLP. About 36 women gathered in one of the firm’s conference rooms and, with a view of the New Castle County Courthouse across the street, the group networked and enjoyed a meal provided by the firm.
Delaware Superior Court Judge Jan R. Jurden was the featured speaker. From her seat at the conference table she led a conversational discussion about the challenges of being a female attorney in a profession long dominated by men. She shared tips for ways women can build their client base – drawn from her earlier experience practicing at Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor LLP – and tips for finding a balance between work and family.
The judge’s remarks sparked several in attendance to share stories and suggestions for dealing with stereotypes and maneuvering through challenging moments when they may find themselves the only female attorney on a case.
The group included new and veteran attorneys, those in large firms and solo practitioners. Some were looking to break back into the job market after taking time away to raise children, while others were looking for new job opportunities in Delaware. For some the event offered a chance to reconnect with old friends.
“These luncheons are great ways for our female alumni to network and bond,” said Nancy Ravert Ward, associate director of alumni relations
. “They offer an enjoyable and enlightening break in the day but don’t require a major time commitment. I encourage our alumnae to join us for the next event in their area.”
