Delaware Supreme Court Justice Randy J. Holland this week presided over a special session of the court on the Delaware campus, where he administered an oath that admitted 21 Widener students to the limited practice of law.

The students were admitted Monday, Aug. 30 under a special rule that allows them to appear in some Delaware courts under very stringent guidelines. The oaths were taken in connection with their work in Widener’s Delaware Civil Clinic, its Environmental and Natural Resources Law Clinic and school externships with the Delaware Department of Justice, Community Legal Aid Society and the Delaware Public Defender’s Office.

Before administering the oath, Holland told the students they will need to start thinking of themselves differently, as clients won’t distinguish them from the licensed attorneys who also take part in their cases.

“You have to conduct yourselves as professionals, in a way that is ethical, and with civility,” he said. “You – as officers of the court – are going to be ambassadors for the administration of justice.”

Associate Professors Kenneth T. Kristl, who supervises the environmental clinic, and Dana Harrington Conner, who supervises the Delaware Civil Clinic, and Lawrence J. Connell, who supervises the externs, moved the students’ admissions to the limited practice of law. Holland, who also serves as a member of the law school’s adjunct faculty, called them role models for legal public service.

“When you have the ability to practice law you have the keys to the courthouse and you have an obligation to make those keys available to others, especially those who can’t afford representation,” he said.
