2011 JURIST Academy Program Closes With Unique Opportunities

"I don't think there's a challenge I can't handle. That's what law school does for you," said Widener Law Harrisburg graduate Vincent L. Champion ’01, an associate at Rhoads & Sinon LLP, as he spoke to participants in the 2011 Harrisburg JURIST Academy program at a special lunch forum on Thursday, June 9th.

Mr. Champion’s visit offered one example of the unique opportunities JURIST Academy students on both the Delaware and Harrisburg campuses enjoyed to engage with practicing attorneys and legal professionals.

On Tuesday, June 7th, Harrisburg Mayor Linda D. Thompson spoke to the Harrisburg students on “Lawyers & Civic Engagement,” and she presented a proclamation acknowledging the role of the JURIST Academy in diversifying the legal profession. The next day, the students traveled to the Dauphin County Court of Common Pleas in the morning, and they visited the chambers of Dauphin County Court of Common Pleas Judge Janine Turgeon in the afternoon.

Delaware JURIST Academy students were treated to a special visit to the Wilmington offices of Richards Layton and Finger on Wednesday, June 1st, and they also had the opportunity to practice oral advocacy with lawyers from Skadden Arps Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP on Thursday June 2nd before giving oral presentation to lawyers from the firm a week later. Additionally, they enjoyed a lunch panel with representatives from the Multicultural Judges and Lawyers Section of the Delaware State Bar. On Wednesday the 8th, they attended a panel discussion on Public Interest Law with Mary Jacobsen of the Mid Atlantic Environmental Law Center and Craig R. Fitzgerald, a child advocate from the Delaware Department of Justice.

Widener Law once again thanks all of the generous sponsors that made the 2011 Jurist Academy such a success.
