The best career path isn’t always an expressway
Bina Singh ’10 was born in India and grew up in the United States. Over the years, she never felt compelled to become an American citizen. Then came the events of 9/11, making her feel truly American for the first time. She set out to obtain the documentation to prove it.

As Singh worked through the legalities of achieving American citizenship, she became fascinated by the process—so fascinated that she put aside her CPA career and pursued a law degree to prepare for a new career of helping people through similarly complex legal processes. As the mother of two children, ages 12 and 8, Singh appreciates the flexible schedule of Widener Law’s 4-year  program.

“I’m fortunate that things have come pretty easily to me in life. But Law school is challenging and has stretched me,” Singh says. “So many people ask me how I do it all. Honestly, it’s my personal life that keeps me grounded and able to put things into perspective when things get tough.”

Singh points to Widener Law’s inspiring faculty members as a key factor in the great experience she’s had as an 4-year program student. “The caliber and accessibility of the faculty are amazing. There truly is an open-door policy, even during non-office hours. It’s just a great academic environment to be in.”

Wanting to contribute to that great atmosphere, Singh heads up the Harrisburg Student Mentor Program. For first-year students, it’s a chance to get matched up with an upperclassman and ease the transition into law school. For Singh, it’s just the beginning of a long career of helping people.
