Josh Schwartz ’08 was born into the legal world. The son of two family law attorneys is confident he has what it takes to practice—and he knows where he wants to make that happen.
“I want to practice in Philadelphia,” Schwartz says. “The Philly legal community is small yet sophisticated, and Widener pops up everywhere.”
Widener’s proximity to Philadelphia made Widener Law the obvious choice for Schwartz. So did all the glowing recommendations he heard from a number of sources, including his father—an alumnus who had nothing but positive things to say. Finally, a visit to the
Delaware Campus sealed the deal, convincing Schwartz that Widener was the place for him. He submitted his tuition deposit that day and turned his focus to choosing a specialization.
Schwartz spent his first two years of law school conducting informational interviews, getting to know the profession and all of its options. While the meetings were informative and great for networking, it was an internship that helped him refine his goals.
“I work for a trial attorney who handles civil litigation,” Schwartz says. “While sitting in court one day I had my ‘ah-ha’ moment. I was like, ‘This is what I want to do.’”
To prepare himself for that path, Schwartz stays involved on campus and takes advantage of a variety of Widener Law opportunities. He’s involved with numerous organizations on campus, including the
Student Bar Association and the
Alternative Dispute Resolution Society. In addition to his law clerk position, he’s participated in the
Judicial Externship Program clerking in the Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia County.
