On Friday, August 22nd, Widener Law’s Delaware Campus hosted a live debate between Chris Coons and Tom Gordon, the two candidates running in the democratic primary for New Castle County Executive. WDEL 1150 AM News Talk Radio aired the debate live from the Ruby R. Vale Moot Court Room from 8:00 to 9:30 AM.

Widener Law Dean Linda L. Ammons gave a short welcome, saying, “On behalf of the faculty staff, and students of the Widener Law Center, I am pleased to welcome all of you here today for this debate between Chris Coons and Tom Gordon in the democratic primary race for county executive. Widener is very pleased, once again, to join 1150 AM WDEL to bring you this debate in a spirit of public service. We hope it goes far in educating the voters about this very important race.”

WDEL 1150 AM morning news anchor Peter MacArthur served as the moderator for the debate while a panel made up of local journalists Allan Loudell of 1150 AM WDEL, Jesse Chadderdon of The Community News, and Mark Eichmann of WHYY asked questions of the candidates. The debate touched on a number of issues ranging from budget cuts and taxes to the federal indictments of Gordon and top aide Sherry L. Freebury on racketeering charges. At times, the debate grew heated, but both candidates had the opportunity to get their messages across.

The primary is set to take place on Tuesday, September 9th.
